Are You Managing Social Media Rightly?

With social media, we can be both a receiver and an influencer. This may cause our hearts to either tune to God or to the World. Yet as Christians, we’re called to be light and salt of the world. So with that identity and dignity in us, we should be responsible for how we’re being shaped internally, and how we’re influencing others. Are you managing social media rightly?

The Social Media:

1) Provides a wellspring of information and news ⟹ Everyone becomes a receiver

2) Gives a platform or microphone to everyone ⟹ Everyone becomes an influencer

** Actually, our posting represent us (Our beliefs and values)

What are you posting?

1) Meaningless Post?

2) Callous Post?

3) Communicative Post?

** Most of us desire to communicate through our post, in one way or another. Yet, it can also cause us to fall into the trap of wanting positive and desirable respond.

** Honestly, there is a reciprocated power behind the workings of the social media. (See how people are being influenced and controlled by what they see and hear).

Verses to Read:

<Ro 8:5> <Gal 5:16> <Eph 5:15-17>

1. 3 inevitable challenges brought by the social media/networking the spiritual way to overcome each of them.

1) The challenge of real time engagement

* Reduces our thinking and processing time

* Shape our nature to become more reactive or superficial

How to overcome it by the Spirit?

Do not be shaped by it

<James 1:19>: Quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.

  • Quick to listen: Good thoughts processing
  • Slow to speak: Speak appropriately, artfully and enough
  • Slow to become angry: Don’t let your emotions get the better of you

2) The challenge of our carnal nature being enlivened

* Increase our desire to be recognized, well liked, popular and valued

* Get into meaningless talks and arguments

* Counter-productive

How to overcome it by the Spirit?

① Check our motives and intention – whether we are gratifying our desires or edifying others with our postings.

② Be careful in the way we live <Eph 5:15>

3) The challenges of new standards to adhere to, even as we evangelize

* The social media is creating a changing culture – What was accepted in the past may not be now.

How to overcome it by the Spirit?

① Engage with the conviction of the Holy Spirit – Be wise, and as shrewd as snake

② <2 Timothy 2:5>: Compete according to the rules

2. Involvement in social media has no define rules or methodology, so we need to do heart checks from time to time.

1) Are we bend on using social media to glorify God (to proclaim his truth and love)?

⟹ Use it with restrained freedom, not total freedom

2) Are we bragging or trying to mislead?

* <1 Cor 3:21> So then let no one boast in men. For all things belong to God.

* <Pro 12:22> says: The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy. (Think about “fake news”)

3) Are we battling envy and discontent? Or are we causing it unknowingly?

* We can easily fall prey to the lust of the eyes.

* We can easily stumble others also.

4) Is this the best way to use my time now?

* The days are evil, we have to redeem our time <Eph 5:15-17>

* Studying, working and skimming through social media at the same time?
