Taking An Affirmative Stand For Christ In Our Culture

We all have our familiar culture, i.e. the one we are brought up with, or the one we are accustomed to. In fact, we all want to live in a way that is culturally familiar and accepting. But have we asked whether our culture goes against the gospel culture? When we have certain mainstream cultures or norms that is counter gospel, would we as Christian sing a different tune, live a different way or have a different stand, simply for the glory of God? Yet, how do we find the strength and wisdom to do it?

Verses To Read: <Rn 1:20-23><Luke 23:50-56> <John 19:38>

Introduction:

  • A culture is simply defined as the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or society.
  • We knowingly and unknowingly are pressured to abide to those cultures.
  • But once we are familiar with those cultures, we build strong defenses against others.
  • Yet, did we realize our culture is a force against the gospel culture?
  • Living for the gospel does involves taking a stand against our culture.

 1. The human culture

1) It is not God-centric.

  •   Humanism

2) Every seemingly “good” culture will always be perverted in the end.

3) We have to be brought into the heavenly culture.

  •   God centric, gospel centric, and church centric culture
  • <Acts 2:46-47> Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

2. Story of Joseph of Arimathea, the man who buried Jesus.

  • Member of the Jewish Sanhedrin
  • Living in a very embedded culture of the Jewish system (Self-righteous, self-serving)
  • Disciple of Jesus in secret
  • Jesus’ death awakened his conscience
  • Asked for Jesus body from Pilate to give Him a proper burial (fulfill the scripture)
  • As a result, many women who followed Jesus took heart and went with him

1) The suffering of Christ brought him to profess his faith publicly

2) The critical act that represent his stand, makes a real difference

  • “If I profess with the loudest voice and clearest exposition every portion of the word of God except precisely that little point which the world and the devil are at that point attacking, I am not confessing Christ however boldly I may be professing Christ. Where the battle rages, there the loyalty of the soldier is tested”. – Martin Luthur

3) Strengthening those who are timid and constrained

3. What can you stand up for?

1) Stand up against the eroding gospel of Christ in the church.

2) Stand up for youthful and vibrant witnessing.

3) Stand up for critical issues that turn the society away from Bible truths.

4) Stand up for the cause of others.
